This course discussed theories of learning; cognitive theory, behaviorist theory, and social constructivist theory. We developed lesson plans and researched technologies for learning. I liked that this course had an emphasis on technology and how to utilize it in the classroom. We created a movie on common misconceptions and how to identify and address them with our students.

CEP 843 focuses on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the research and resources available about ASD. We did research article reviews, case studies, and a book review. We also learned how to create a transition plan for a student with ASD. In this course, we were able to select our own research articles and books as long as they followed the criteria of the assignment. As ASD is such a complex topic, we could direct our research towards a specific aspect that we wanted to learn about.

We reviewed scholarly journals to learned about several strategies including interactive writing, mnemonic devices, and organizational skills. We also created a comprehensive Professional Development project for teachers working with students with mild disabilities. Specifically, we put together a 6-hour presentation on how to help this population in math.

We also compiled our own list of electronic resources that we could utilize in the future. At the end of the course, we created a Special Topics presentation and researched a specific disability, interventions, and strategies for teachers in inclusive classrooms working with students who have this disability.

This course focused on psychology and education collaboratively as well as prevention and intervention strategies. We reviewed research articles each week and engaged in discussions through blog posts. Each week, someone was assigned as the discussant and had to provide the discussion questions. The professor provided guidance and feedback on these questions and the discussions as well. At the end of the course, we created a Presentation to the Board project which focused on one aspect of education where intervention is needed.

In this course, we learned about the pioneers of education. We started with John Dewey and learned about progressive education. We also read works by Vivian Pauley including, Girl with the Brown Crayon. One book I especially enjoyed was Philip A. Cusick’s, A Passion for Learning. This book features seven influential Americans with stories of motivation, perseverance, courage, and education.

In ED 870, we created this website about our experience in the MAED program. We analyzed our own learning and reflected on our previous coursework. In addition, we had the opportunity to write about our experience through essays. This website is a comprehensive project of our coursework, work experience, and goals in education.
